Little Big Delay

Well, it seems poor old Sony’s show pony has hit a problem. One of the levels in the game has background music containing a few lines from the Koran: the below is taken from the Sony blog

“During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologize for any offense that this may have caused.

We will begin shipping LittleBigPlanet to retail in North America the week of October 27th. Sorry for the delay, and rest assured, we are doing everything we can to get LittleBigPlanet to you as soon as possible.”

This means the game is delayed by a whopping 2 weeks and will be released head to head with Fallout 3, arguably an unwise choice. More importantly this has upset fans, claiming that games are the ultimate in freedom of speech and that such a small incident should not put a game back.

****UK UPDATE”"”"”

Sony Europe has announced that LittleBigPlanet is to be released no later than the week beginning November 3 in Europe, the Middle East and Australia.

The company will be keen to ensure it’s out sooner rather than later – Microsoft’s Gears of War 2 goes on sale that same week, on Friday November 7.

Personalise Me…

With the release of Saints Row 2 last week and Fable 2 and Little Big Planet coming soon, there has been a  shift in the level of gaming developers are providing. Instead of linear storylines with a pre-determined central character we are being given a fully customisable characters and an open world to play out their lives in.

This represents a huge shift in what is perceived to be the ideal gaming solution so to speak, after GTA4 people have been praising the open world but blaming Niko for their lack of connection to the story, this is a criticism I can sympathise with. For all the graphical splendour and dynamic gameplay of GTA4, I have found it collecting dust on my shelf, why?I can’t stand Niko. I want to progress him through the story to play the game not too learn more about him.

This is a significant problem that other games have faced (Army of Two etc), if a player does not connect to the character then there is little or no incentive to play through. This has been countered by Saints Row 2, seen as the poor mans GTa when it was first released a few years ago it has risen from the shadows with a new pitch “We may not be as snazzy but we are a damn sight more fun”. Being able to customise every detail on your character may seem like a rip of San Andreas but it is done with more of an influence on the game. Buying a crib, new clothes, jewellrey and tatoos adds to your style score which helps increase your respect.

For me, this has made the world of difference I spent hours earning enough money to customise my gang (they are presently jamaican ninjas), crib and clothes so that I feel like the head of the Saints and I want to beat these other gangs. It may sound simple but it is the basis of success for other games like The Sims and more recently Spore, for your £40 you want to see some of you in the game.

This is a huge leap from the over promised Fable which introduced the idea of choices and customisation, and builds on the solid foundations of Mass Effect. It will be interesting to see the results of Fable 2 which is out this week, promising wives, children and a much greater depth than the first.

Microsoft’s bid for Global Domination..

If E3 has taught us anything it is that

a) People are bored of Nintendo’s casual gaming

b) Microsoft want to rule the world

c) Sony are still a bit lost

But more importantly it is that Microsoft not only want to have the greatest gaming presence, and will go to any lengths to do so.

The latest blow for Sony is that Tekken 6 is due on the 360 next fall, this is another Sony associated exclusive Microsoft have lured away. As far as big gaming annoucements go, Bungie were finally able to announce the stand alone Halo 3 expansion ‘Halo Recon’ and slate it for a fall 09 release:

The greatest development that Microsoft have worked on is the new Xbox Live upgrade. Getting rid of the blades and replacing it with avatars and a host of new features, various bosses have been speaking to the press for several months and finally the date has been announced as:

17th november!

Rumours are that Sony will be launching PSN Home at the same time…let the battle commence!

The Fable 2 Saga Continues…

Yet again I have managed to leave a huge delay in posting ( a month this time), and would like to apologise. It seems finally working in the games industry is taking alot of my time!

The biggest news have been surrounding the much hyped Fable 2:

Ever the quiet man Peter Molyneux has been shouting from the rooftops that he really hasn’t over promised this time. No sooner had he done that then it was announced that Fable 2 was looking to ship without on line co-op. For me this is one of the greatest appeals about the game and I was utterly devestated, however he has since ‘kind of’ promised that it will be ready in time for the UK release.

The second saga has been for the poor folks who pre-ordered the game at GAME. The special edition has been promised for over a month boasting a bobble head, making of DVD, developer diaries, soundtrack and swish packaging. Over 2 weeks GAME announced that the packing, developer diaries and bobble head would not make it to the box and reduced the price. You will still get a dvd, and some in game content but nothing else.

I appreciate that it is not the retailers fault but they had problems with the Star Wars exclusive in game abilities and the COD5 beta codes are not working. It does not bode well for new releases!

The last part is that when eager reviewers and press received their Fable 2 copies, there was a note from mr Molyneux asking them to get a non gamer to play it and if possible to not review the game until the online co-op was live. This has prompted an outcry from many sites who see it as asking them to lie to their users and to play an essentially unfinished product. For me, it is more the fact that he is releasing the game with a major feature missing which is poor and is now drawing attention to it.

It will be interesting to see what the reviews say…

MMOs and Beta Testing

It seems that all the large games publishers are releasing their own mmos at the moment, the most recent addition is the Buffy MMo that is proclaimed to be a more social mmo than quest based.

With Warhammer Online, Battlefield Heroes, Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King and Football Manager Live all on their way in the next few months there is extra scrutiny on all.

EA have announced that Battlefield heroes will not only be free to play but will also have a low key release, the currently closed beta simply opening up and rolled out. At present to be a beta tester you must win a key on several on site quizzes, I have entered many but have yet to win! As a free to play game the quality of graphics and the time put into it is phenomenal, I am curious to see how the game will make its money back: whether through advertising or through through users buying add ons to the main game.

Warhammer Online has been in beta for many months and announced that it was becoming an open beta yesterday. no sooner had this been announced an open, than their resgistration servers go down and the download client breaks causing the CEO to post an official apology on the site. Today they are still fixing bugs and although you cannot register you can download the client.

Not a massively positive start compared to the smooth running of the WOW beta, which will remain closed up until the games release.

However, this leads nicely to FML who had an unfortunate server crash the day they annouced pre-order for their game. Both Warhammer and FML have received critiscism from beta testers who cannot get into their games, and for me I find that apalling. Yes, beta testers will have to put up with bugs and down time, but they signed up because they love the game/company and accepted these in return for a free game before anyone else.

More and more it seems that people are more than willing to take the free things (such as the EA petrol stunt) but quick enough to complain when it isn’t just right. By their very nature MMOS need time to fgrow, develop and adjust and it is through the fans they look to do this: online gaming, even through to XBOX and PS3 is always at the whims of the internet and accepting this as a beta tester should lead to alot more patience.

Believe..

In what is either an inspired piece of advertising or a fantastic fan video, there is a trailer for Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise which is a pinata version of the infamous Halo 3 ‘Believe’ trailer. Microsoft are denying that the trailer is made by themand I’m inclined to believe them, either way it is great to see the Halo 3 trailer again and have a laugh at the Pinatas…

Dealing with the Industry

With any commercial industry there will always be characters, shameless self promotion and take overs. The gaming industry is no different, except that people only seem to be realising now. It is naive to believe that an industry that is so vast does not have a basic need to make money whichever way possible, and as more companys start to merge it seems apparent that the smaller studios simply cannot keep up.

Whether it is a large proposed take over such as EA and Take 2 (which I’m sure has been going on for months now) or a more subtle merge such as Activision and Blizzard last year. Ultimatley it can be the fan who loses out, after months of events and press it seems Activision is looking for another company to publish the Ghostbusters game. In the long run I know that companieslook for the best deal to see the games perform well but one can’t help but feel nervous.

The same applies to gaming press and media, I try not to read reviews but have been following the Too Human reviews, they criticise the hype and build up for the game without even realising it is them who have created it. The game would have been a good, average game if it hadn’t been for the press and it is at times like that I wonder how influenced my gaming purchases are by what I red (I still bought alone in the dark though!).

Speaking of press, a great example of fantastic promo (if not a tad reckless) was done today by EA for Mercenaries 2
